Turnbull Stakes to Have Dramatic Effect on Caulfield Cup Betting

October 4th, 2012

The Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m), which will be run this Saturday at Flemington racecourse, will have a dramatic impact on 2012 Caulfield Cup betting markets.

Thirteen of the sixteen runners in the Turnbull Stakes are hoping to run in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) in a fortnight’s time and most of the leading contenders are in the field.

The Turnbull Stakes is always a key lead-up race to the major Cups and the past two winners of the Caulfield Cup Descarado (2010) and Southern Speed (2011) have come out of the Turnbull Stakes.

However, no horse has completed the Turnbull Stakes-Caulfield Cup double since Elvstroem in 2004 with last year’s Turnbull Stakes winner December Draw finishing last in the Caulfield Cup after being injured in the running.

That won’t stop the Caulfield Cup odds of the Turnbull Stakes winner being slashed on Saturday.

December Draw is the current Caulfield Cup favourite at bookmaker.com.au and his price will shorten dramatically if can win his second straight Turnbull Stakes.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained import is suited to Flemington and 2000m is his best distance.

There are still question marks over whether he can run a strong 2400m after injury plagued his Caulfield Cup chances last year.

Southern Speed will move into Caulfield Cup favouritism if she can become the first mare to win the Turnbull Stakes since Devil Moon in 2007.

The daughter of Southern Image is attempting to make history and become the first mare to win the Caulfield Cup on two occasions.

Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon has been near the top of Caulfield Cup betting markets since they opened but connections still won’t confirm whether the son of Montjeu will actually start in the race.

Co-owner Nick Williams said last month that a decision will be made after connections evaluate his performance in the Turnbull Stakes.

Italian import Voila Ici found form in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) and has been the market mover in the Turnbull Stakes betting market at bookmaker.com.au.

Leading Victorian trainer Peter Moody is hoping the veteran gelding will become his first ever Caulfield Cup winner.

Other horses contesting the Turnbull Stakes who are heading to the Caulfield Cup are Winchester ($26), Niwot ($51), Zabeelionaire ($26), Linton ($31), Moudre ($26), Sanagas ($51), Sneak a Peek ($41), Zurella ($51) and Seville ($51).
