Sacred Master was transferred to the care of Chris Waller after he finished third in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 12 and he made a slow start to his racing career in Australia.

The Mastercraftsman gelding showed what he was capable of with a second place finish behind Slow Pace in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) on September 2 and he was far from disgraced when fourth behind Sir John Hawkwood in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 1.

Sacred Master was posted at Caulfield Cup odds of $34 when the final field was released earlier in the week, but there has been consistent support for the five-year-old and he has been easily the best-backed runner with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Chris Waller has both Preferment and Sacred Master in the 2016 Caulfield Cup field, but the leading Sydney trainer believes that it is Sacred Master that is his best chance of recording a maiden Caulfield Cup victory.

“Sacred Master I think has a pretty good chance,” Waller told The Sydney Morning Herald.

He is in form and loves dry track.”

“He has had a tough preparation and I think you need a tough preparation to win a Caulfield Cup,” Waller said. “He was good when he won the Newcastle Cup and in the Metropolitan, where he was fourth, he just got too far back and really found the line.

“Tommy knows him well and I think he is going to run out the 2400m and from gate eight he can be closer in the race.”

Other horses that have been well-backed in 2016 Caulfield Cup betting include Tarzino ($31 into $26), Sir John Hawkwood ($19 into $16), Real Love ($8 into $7.50) and Go Dreaming ($201 into $81), while Sir Isaac Newton ($11 out to $13), Almoonqith ($51 out to $61), Jameka ($3.20 out to $3.60) have all been on the drift.
